Chacewater Millennium Green

Chacewater Millennium Green is a community green space of approximately 0.65 hectares beside the Village Hall, created as part of the national Millennium Greens programme at the turn of the millennium. The site had long been used for village Bonfire Night celebrations before being secured for permanent community use.

The project originated in the late 1990s following an agreement with the Tregothnan Estate and was developed with funding from the Countryside Agency (now part of Natural England) on behalf of the Millennium Commission, together with support from the County Environmental Trust. A dedicated charitable body — the Chacewater Millennium Green Trust — was established to manage the Green, a requirement of the national funding programme.

Officially opened on 10 September 2000 by Dame Annette Penhaligon, the Green was designed as an informal, multi-use space accessible to everyone. Features include gently sloping meandering paths, bench seating, picnic tables, wildlife planting, a pond with wetland habitat, and a circle of granite boulders marking the traditional bonfire site. Volunteer involvement played an important role in its development and continues to support its long-term care.

Today, the Millennium Green remains an important natural and social space for relaxation, informal recreation and community events in Chacewater.
